Charles III immediately became King the day his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on September 8, 2022, a day that will forever break the hearts of royal fans everywhere.
King Charles Was Informed of His Mother’s Death In the Most Unorthodox Way
Imagine being told your mother has died in the most unorthodox way possible. King Charles was informed of the Queen’s death that morning when he answered his phone and heard “Hello, Your Majesty….”
He was then, of course, told of the Queen’s passing. Charles had just left her bedside at Balmoral Castle earlier that day.
Charles’s reign marked the start of a new chapter for the monarchy. For instance, there are some things the King accepts that his mother would never have allowed.
For example, Charles is known to kiss his well-wishers on the hand or cheek. The Queen, on the other hand, maintained a more formal, distant relationship with the people she ruled.
Unlike his mother, Charles shares his opinion with the public. He was also open about his cancer diagnosis, which he announced in February 2024.
Charles has a history of speaking out about issues close to his heart, such as climate change and green energy, which, believe it or not, the Queen would have frowned upon his candor.
King Charles and Queen Camilla Were Photographed On the Balcony During His Coronation
Of course, one of the most famous differences royal fans know is the snap taken of King Charles and Queen Camilla on the balcony of Buckingham Palace during his groundbreaking coronation.
Chris Jackson of Getty Images recently spoke about the photo. Jackson has been following and photographing the British Royal Family for over 20 years.
He recently shared an inside scoop while promoting his new book, “Modern Majesty: The British Royal Family Today.”
The book, which was published on March 3, is a curated photo book and visual narrative that documents the British Royal Family.
It features some behind-the-scenes photographs that demonstrate the fine balance between the traditional and modern monarchy.
It also chronicles the continually evolving roles of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Jackson told Vanity Fair that
“The book’s cover image means so much to me.”
The snap captured a newly crowned King Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, on the balcony at his coronation in May 2023.
Royal Photographer Admits King Charles Marked “Significant Change In the Way Things Are Done”
Jackson points out that the shot,
“Never would have happened during the late Queen’s reign.” He continued, “We all remember Queen Elizabeth II, an iconic figure who was revered and respected around the world, someone I always thoroughly enjoyed photographing.”
Jackson adds,
“But since King Charles became King, I have noticed a significant change in the way things are done.”
Plus, King Charles’s monarchy is more “slimmed down” compared to Her Majesty’s Firm. Charles has significantly reduced the public role of the working royal family members.
Although his mother’s tradition influences Charles, he leads a less formal monarchy. When his son, Prince William, takes the throne, the monarchy will continue to evolve.
One of the biggest changes will be his prioritizing his family life over the monarchy. Prince William and Kate Middelton also stated they will not live in a castle when he becomes King. The couple intends to live in their new forever home at Forest Lodge in Windsor, Great Park, in November 2025.
Prince William told comedian Eugene Levy, during an interview, that “Change was on his agenda.” So, it’s going to be interesting to see how Charles’s son, William, handles his reign as King when his time comes.
