‘Welcome to Plathville’ Spoilers tells that all season long and half of last season, we heard talk of Lydia Plath having a “special friend” AKA crush on this one boy and even going so far as to text this young man behind Kim and Barry’s backs.
Last season we thought that he was dating someone else (or at least that’s what Moriah told Lydia) and then this season it seemed he was pretty free so he and Lydia started texting again much to Kim and Barry’s chagrin, only for things to be put on hold when Mom Kim Plath thought that Lydia should be focusing on graduating high school instead of crushing on boys.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: Did we meet Lydia’s special friend?
But then at Lydia’s graduation party, we meet this young man named Phillip, whom Lydia seems to know and the Plath seem to know. They say that their families have known each other for around 4 years and he’s a youth pastor down in Tallahassee.
He seems to be a pretty honest guy and says that anything that has to do with Jesus has to do with him, and that he’s most impressed by how on fire for God Lydia is. However, there was no actual confirmation that Phillip was the guy she had been texting. Lydia never said, and Kim and Barry never said, the only vague confirmation that we got was when Phillip himself mentioned that he and Lydia discussed the bible regularly.
‘Welcome to Plathville’: How… anti-climactic.
There was no confrontation at Lydia’s graduation party either, like we were expecting, no laying down of the law, no weird discussion of rules about courtship or anything like that. Lydia had a fairly normal high school graduation party complete with couples dancing.
Can we just talk about how Moriah said that she didn’t recognize half the people there? She gave the clue that growing up they really didn’t have very many friends. I’m thinking that TLC sent out a casting call–ahem–or shall we say “invites” to this party and had a few people attend. It did seem kind of weird that suddenly the Plaths would have friends coming out of the woodwork.
Also, we all have a question for Kim – since when did any of the Plaths play volleyball? I thought they weren’t allowed to participate in team sports? Is there a homeschool volleyball team that no one told us about? Where was that episode? Since when did Kim and Barry view socialization as a vital part of their kids’ upbringing?
Because they certainly didn’t seem to think so with the older four. But Moriah did say that perhaps she was the one that pushed them towards change… congrats to Moriah, I guess, but something about that seemed a bit… performative.
Either way, we never really got any confirmation about whether or not Phillip was Lydia’s special friend so we’re just going to assume that he was. One thing that didn’t quite add up though was that he said that he was already a youth pastor and Kim had said about Lydia’s friend to “let him graduate high school first”, can one be a youth pastor while still in high school?
Because in church circles “youth pastor” usually means someone is college-aged. Granted, that could be 18, but still. We’re glad that she got to waltz with him, but we do wonder what the motivation was for Kim and Barry’s sudden change of heart. Guess we’ll have to wait’ll next season now. Stay tuned!!!
