They are doing what they can to show their solidarity and their support. Bono and The Edge, of the Irish band U2, performed a concert in a Kiev metro station this weekend. The rock stars performed the U2 classics Sunday Bloody Sunday, Desire and With Or Without you to a small crowd. The stars tweeted that they had been invited to Kiev to perform by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself. Here’s what you need to know.

In videos shared on social media, the pair can be seen performing the Ben E King classic Stand By Me alongside Ukrainian soldiers. Bono issued a prayer “for peace,” and praised Ukraine’s fight for “freedom” from Russia’s invasion. “The people in Ukraine are not just fighting for your own freedom, you are fighting for all of us who love freedom,” Bono said.

The singer also referenced the past conflicts in the band’s native Ireland, as air raid sirens echoed in the Ukrainian capital, and fighting raged on in the country’s Donbas region. He added 90 people had been sheltering in the school’s basement, but that “most likely, all 60 people who remain under the rubble are now dead.”

Meanwhile, and around Ukraine, Zelenskyy said more than 300 civilians have been rescued from the besieged steel plant in the southeastern coastal city of Mariupol, in what he called the first phase of an evacuation mission. Zelenskyy said preparations are now under way to get the wounded and doctors out of the plant.

The World Health Organization has documented 200 attacks on health-care facilities in Ukraine, according to its top official. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the global health agency stands with the people of Ukraine and called on Russia to end the war.

That said, a dress rehearsal for Russia’s annual “Victory Day” is underway on Saturday. May 9 will mark the anniversary of the then-Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
