Vasiliy Lomachenko, ESPN’s No. 8 pound-for-pound boxer has joined a defense battalion in Ukraine as the country continues to fight off an invasion from Russia. The two-time Olympic gold medalist was shown wearing military fatigues in a photo shared on his Facebook page.

The 34-year-old boxer was in Greece when the invasion began and his flight was delayed going home. He ended up flying into Bucharest and traveled through Romania on Saturday to reach his home outside of Odessa to be with his family.

Boxers taking up arms to fight against Russia seems to be the new theme going around as the mayor of Kyiv, Hall of Fame boxer Vitali Klitschko announced he would also be out fighting Russia with his brother, fellow Hall of Famer Wladimir Klitschko.

Mykola Kovalchuk, president of WBC Ukraine said. “We are so proud of our boxers, our real champions in boxing and champions in this war. We are proud to be Ukrainians.”

People reacted to Lomachenko saying, “God bless you my favorite boxer. Be careful there”, “You are a very brave men! Good luck Champ”, “Love from Japan. Wishing you all protection, a speedy peace treaty, and safe return home.” and “Great Loma !!! You are my inspiration.”

Ukraine continues to hold its home and push back the Russian invasion and every day we continue to hear more stories like this. From Hall of Fame boxers to a comedian turned President, the heart of Ukraine couldn’t be bigger.

We wish everyone well and hope to see them hold their ground and hopefully, other countries will join in on the ground effort as for now Russian President Vladimir Putin has been cut off from SWIFT, as well as having other sanctions thrown at Russia. Will it be enough?

What do you think? Are you a fan of Vasiliy Lomachenko and would you have ever imagined they would all join up in the fight? Let us know in the comments below.
