‘The Young and the Restless’ (Y&R) spoilers reveal that Joshua Morrow recently spoke with Soap Opera Digest and explained how he’s doing with portraying Nick Newman’s growing drug addiction and his inevitable rock bottom.
‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: Morrow Never Expected Nick to Struggle with Addiction
We all know that addiction runs in the Newman family. Case in point: Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott). Nikki battled her alcoholism for decades.
She fell off the wagon several times and understands all about how addictive substances affect the mind and body. Nikki could guide Nick once he realizes he desperately needs help. Nick has become addicted to a very dangerous drug, fentanyl.
Given the number of people in this country who have tragically died from their fentanyl addictions, this is a really important story for Y&R to tackle.
Morrow wants to make his portrayal of a drug addict as authentic as possible. The actor’s sister is a doctor, and she explained what she’s seen in people with an addiction when they need their fix.
Drug addiction is a direction that Morrow never in a million years thought his character would go to. It’s a real departure for the character.
He said,
“Nick’s the hero. He’s not the guy who’s hurt. Nick is not the guy who needs help. He’s the guy who’s solving stuff. So, I love that the show gave me this opportunity.”

Morrow admitted he did some research online before diving into this dark storyline. He explained,
“I researched drug use, and I’m sure that I was flagged on my computer or whatever.”
The actor is also well aware of how relevant this story is and wants to educate the audience,
“I know that fentanyl is obviously a massive, massive problem in our country.”
‘The Young and the Restless’ Spoilers: “I Don’t Think He’s Considered the Ramifications of How Serious This Can Be”
He told SOD,
“So, at first, I was a little scared of the story and being able to do it justice without it coming across as just sort of like, ‘Let’s just delve into this area for a little bit and then get out.”
Morrow continued,
“I wanted to give it impact. I wanted it to be palpable. When you’re watching it, I hope people feel something. I wanted them to see this character going on this journey and spiraling, and hopefully, he’ll come out of it and maybe even be a better person.”
While Nick knows about his mom’s struggle with alcoholism, he’s not really thinking about it. Morrow told the outlet,
“I think it’s a little soon in the game. I don’t think he’s considered the ramifications of how serious this can be.”

However, Morrow knows that somewhere down the line, Nick’s going to see the truth and realize there are some significant similarities between his own addiction and Nikki’s alcoholism.
Yet, Morrow said,
“But I just think that Nick is still in that mode of ‘I can handle anything, and I’m not concerned about any ramifications from it.”
Clearly, Nick’s addiction will get worse before it gets better. Right now, it’s about getting through the day and getting his fix. However, if someone Nick loves is hurt somehow because of his addiction, Morrow added,
“That would be rock bottom for him.”
