Meghan Markle’s baby shower was one that the palace will always remember, and not for a positive reason. It took place in February 2019 while she was pregnant with Archie.
Meghan Thought Being A Duchess Would Elevate Her Celebrity Status
Royal biographer Tom Bower explained that Meghan had a “glitzy New York bash” that wasn’t really thrown to celebrate the imminent arrival of a new life. Still, rather, it was meant to promote her and her celebrity friend’s careers.
She partied at the swanky Mark Hotel on the Upper East Side with the likes of tennis pro-Serena Williams and her “Suits” co-star, Abigail Spencer.
Meghan also invited fashion designer Misha Nonoo and George Clooney’s wife, as well as human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.
The guests were treated with extravagantly displayed flowers, gourmet food, and expensive gift bags. She really wanted to make it a point to show off her wealth and status.
On the other hand, Meghan Markle’s new sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, didn’t have a baby shower for any of her children as she thought “a lavish baby shower would be highly inappropriate.” Not a single member of the royal family came to Meghan’s shower.
Meghan didn’t seem to care how inappropriate it was; she was going to make a splash. Royal biographer Ingrid Seward described the occasion as “trashy.”
At the time, she told the Daily Mail,
“They walked in through the front entrance carrying these enormous bags from the most expensive shops in New York.”
She continued,
“Crowds gathered because they were all celebrities, there was Gayle King from CBS, Serena Williams, and Amal Clooney.”
Reports from the palace claimed the royal family was disgusted with Meghan’s party. It was as though Meghan thought being a Duchess would elevate her celebrity status.
Meghan Markle’s Friends Took Advantage Of The Publicity
The result had no resemblance to a traditional baby shower. Despite her claims that she cares about the environment, the Duchess flew on a private jet for the event.
Tom Bower revealed that Meghan had Serena William’s publicist plan for the party. The Mark Hotel was one of New York’s few luxury hotels that guaranteed publicity for its occupants.
Daily Mail investigated and uncovered that Meghan, “disguised” in big black sunglasses,
“only snuck out the side door to avoid giving the impression that she was enjoying the media attention.”
Meghan Markle’s insistence on leaving the hotel out through the service door required vehicles to be moved to the line up at the door, signaling attention.
Meghan wasn’t the only one lapping up the publicity. Serena Williams, Amal Clooney, and Jessica Mulroney all used the event to promote their brand.
Meghan’s make-up artist, “with lightning speed,” posted pictures from the baby shower on social media, along with his salon’s address.
Bower also claimed that those who dared criticize or question Meghan were deemed “racists” by her celebrity circle.
Meghan had been telling her friends that her life in the palace was akin to a prison sentence and that she supposedly had no freedom.
In Prince Harry and Meghan’s Netflix docuseries, Meghan claimed that the evil media was
“trying to ruin the beautiful moment.”
The truth is that Meghan’s baby shower was jarringly unroyal and made her look as desperate for publicity as she really is.
