‘Survivor 41’ spoilers find that this week’s episode was highly entertaining- who doesn’t like a fake idol, a divisive tribe and huge amounts of scrambling at tribal council? But while we all enjoyed watching Liana Wallace’s fierceness turn to fumbling-the-bag as Xander Hastings played her like a violin, purist are wondering if there’s any strategy anymore, or are all these players simply being blown by the wind…or the advantages.
Survivor has garnered so many legions of fans thanks to its three pillars- outwit, outlast and outplay. But the ‘new Survivor’ looks more to be out-advantage, outrun and out of my mind confused with who has what and when they can use it.
‘Survivor 41’ Spoilers: Where’s the Strategy?
The usual format sees the players strategize, form alliances, compete to keep themselves and their alliances safe and shoulder a healthy level of mistrust for everyone who isn’t their own reflection. Sure, there will be an idol or advantage or two to add some spice and keep the castaways on their toes. No one wants to watch complacency.
But there’s complacency, and then there is no chance to even build your own game. In Survivor 41, even winning immunity can’t keep you safe, as witnessed by this week’s episode when Erika Casupanan “turned back time”. The thing was, she didn’t just turn back time to give the teams a chance to complete again, she turned the previous days into Bizarro World and those who’d previously won immunity were now on the chopping block and had to compete for individual immunity.
In unseen footage, Danny McCray was allegedly very upset by this and let host Jeff Probst know it. Many viewers would agreed that Bizarro World (not Turn Back Time) wasn’t a twist…it was, in Danny’s words, a lie.
Already the mammoth amounts of twists and advantages is irking viewers, and it’s only going to get worse now that the merge has happened and play “really starts”. How someone is meant to build a resume and plead their case at final tribal is anyone’s guess, as it who will make it to the end.
Viewers can likely expect many more tribal councils where everyone is scrambling and advantages are played-some successfully, some not -Liana with the misused Knowledge is Power advantage and Sydney Segal with the failed Shot in the Dark will attest.
At least it was only insufferable Sydney that got the boot this time around, but if a fan favorite’s game play is cut short because of a Count All the Coconuts on the Island advantage (hey, we’re nearly at that point of ridiculousness), you can guarantee it will be more than just ex-villain, Russel Hantz who will be vowing to never watch again.
