One moment they love you, the next moment they loathe you. Ben Affleck is certainly learning things this the hard way as the internet has been dragging him for comments he made about his ex-wife Jennifer Garner in his interview with Howard Stern.
Apparently, Ben suggested that it was his marriage to Jen that made him go hard on the liquor bottle each night. His critics have since slammed him for blaming Jen for his alcoholism, making him perhaps the most hated ex-husband in America right now. Here’s what you need to know.

For one unexplained reason or another, Ben decided to get very candid about his divorce from Howard Stern. Speaking about his marriage to Jen Garner, Ben said, “We probably would’ve ended up at each other’s throats. I probably still would’ve been drinking. Part of why I started drinking was because I was trapped. I was like, ‘I can’t leave because of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’ And what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”
But he also did have this to say, “The truth was we took our time, we made the decision, we grew apart. We had a marriage that didn’t work. We tried because we had kids. We did not want it to be the model of marriage for the kids. We did our best. She’s somebody I love and respect, but to whom I shouldn’t be married any longer. I knew she was a good mom, and I hoped she knew I was a good dad. I had to get sober, and I acknowledge that.”
Of course, it didn’t take very long for the internet to react. Many people commented with, “And he’s a total jerk for these comments. By saying, ‘I couldn’t leave because of my kids’ he’s basically blaming his children for keeping him in the marriage. That’s horrible for them to hear. And yes he had drinking issues before during and after his marriage to Jen Garner,” along with, “Is he sober now? What a huge attack to the mother of his children and to his family, the innocent people who suffered a lot because of him. The perfect Christmas present for them. Shame!”
Another person said, “This wasn’t just a poor choice of words. He is saying he felt trapped in his marriage and by his children, so he drank. He didn’t have to drink. It was a choice HE made. He could have sought out a therapist, gone to rehab, ANYTHING other than indulge in drinking. He has a victim mentality and cannot take responsibility for his own actions.”
