Say it isn’t so! Bridgerton fans from around the world just let out a collective sigh of disappointment knowing that actor Rege-Jean Page will not be returning to reprise his role as Simon Bassett in the widely popular Netflix regency drama. Some fans are surely going to have a hard time recovering from this news. Here’s what you need to know.

Netflix (via Lady Whistledown, of course) made the surprise announcement on Friday that Rege-Jean will not be coming back for Season 2. The second season will focus on Julia Quinn’s second book and center on Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s (Jonathan Bailey) quest for a bride.

Bridgerton Season 2: Rege-Jean Page Will Not Be Returning

“Dear Readers, while all eyes turn to Lord Anthony Bridgerton’s quest to find a Viscountess, we bid adieu to Regé-Jean Page, who so triumphantly played the Duke of Hastings,” a tweet from Lady W read. “We’ll miss Simon’s presence onscreen, but he will always be a part of the Bridgerton family.”

With that said, though, Phoebe Dynevor (Daphne Bridgerton) will be back. “Daphne will remain a devoted wife and sister, helping her brother navigate the upcoming social season and what it has to offer — more intrigue and romance than my readers may be able to bear,” the message continued.

In addition, Shonda Rhimes shared a message on Instagram saying goodbye to the Duke of Hastings.

“Remember: the Duke is never gone. He’s just waiting to be binge watched all over again,” Rhimes wrote alongside a photo of Page in character.

The incredibly popular Netflix show has been a monster hit for Netflix, with the streamer reporting that a record 82 million households devoured the series’ eight episodes in the first month after its Christmas Day release.
