There’s a new report that says Queen Elizabeth “reluctantly” canceled her latest royal engagement over medical advice to rest. Here’s what you need to know.
While you’d think there was no stopping her, Queen Elizabeth’s medical team has made it pretty clear that she needs to work less and rest more in the coming weeks and maybe even months ahead. Buckingham Palace said the Queen canceled her trip to Northern Ireland after receiving “medical advice to rest for the next few days.”

“Her Majesty is in good spirits and is disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland, where she had been due to undertake a series of engagements today and tomorrow,” the palace said in a statement to the press.
“The Queen sends her warmest good wishes to the people of Northern Ireland and looks forward to visiting in the future,” the statement concluded.
As many royal fans know by now, Elizabeth II is the longest-reigning monarch in the history of Great Britain. Earlier this year, Dame Hilary Mantel said she thinks Britain’s royal family is likely nearing its end and will probably not outlast Prince William’s reign as King of England. She told the Telegraph in a new interview, “I think it’s the end game. I don’t know how much longer the institution will go on.”
Dame Hilary added, “I’m not sure if it will outlast William. So I think it will be their last big era.”
Dame Hilary wrote the book Wolf Hall and was awarded the Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006 and then made a dame by Prince Charles in 2014. She added that she thinks Queen Elizabeth is the only person who really believes in the monarchy anymore.
“I wish the Queen had felt able to abdicate … I understand that she thinks of this as a sacred task, from which you simply cannot abdicate, whereas the rest of us think of it as a job, from which you should be able to retire,” the author said. “She believes that she cannot cease to be a monarch — she made those promises to God.”
