Prince Harry has reportedly told his friends that he would gladly take on a temporary role to help his family. He could assume royal duties while King Charles and Kate Middleton are recuperating. He said that it
“made perfect sense on a practical level.”
A Half- in Half- Out Approach Would Be Inappropriate
Harry made another comment when he was interviewed on Good Morning America. He was asked if his father’s ill health could have a
“reunifying effect on his family.”
He also said,
“I’ve got other trips planned that would take me through or back to the UK, so I’ll stop and see my family as much as I can.”
Royal expert Hugo Vickers says that no one wants Harry and Meghan to return to the UK. His grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, had told him before she passed that a half-in-half-out approach would not be acceptable to the monarchy.
However, the King and Kate also have their health to consider. They do not want to push themselves too hard since the King is undergoing treatment for his cancer, and Kate is still recovering from abdominal surgery.
Another source explains that both sides have said many things about each other over the past few years, but that hasn’t changed the bond of family that will always be there no matter what.
On the subject of Harry possibly coming to the UK to help his family, the source had this to say,
“The details of the Clarence House meeting and subsequent conversations are private, but the feeling is that this arrangement could work.”
King Charles and Prince Harry would need to sit down and devise a written agreement and plan for him to return for a temporary role in the monarchy if he agreed that Harry could do this, but it would be against the Queen’s express wishes.
The Rules Will Not Change for Harry
Although other sources close to the palace say that the King’s ill health will not modify the rules or change the fact that Harry is no longer a working royal, he shouldn’t be allowed to return if he’s not going to commit his life to serving the monarchy.
It doesn’t seem appropriate for Harry to offer to work temporarily. His grandmother decided, and while she is no longer with us, that decision should stand.
Buckingham Palace will not disclose what kind of cancer the King is stricken with. The Duke has also declined to comment, saying that the state of his father’s health.

The other factor is that Harry and Meghan have spent the past four years badmouthing the royal family, claiming they were treated poorly.
The Sussexes have since been estranged from the royal family. There hasn’t been much contact between them since they left the UK for California in January 2020.
Another issue is that now Harry is talking about becoming an official US citizen. He would need to give up his royal titles if he decided to go through with it. So, if he weren’t even considered a royal anymore, that would certainly put a stop to any thoughts of him returning. Even temporarily would not be acceptable.
