Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not welcomed at Balmoral this year. King Charles continues his late mother, Queen Elizabeth’s tradition of having family gatherings at her Scottish residence.
The Divide Between Harry And His Father Is Wide
The royal family first acquired Balmoral in 1852, when Prince Albert acquired the estate for his wife, Queen Victoria. Since then, the royals have used Balmoral as a home for summer holidays.
The royals expected to join the King at Balmoral this year include Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Princess Anne and her husband, Sir Tim Laurence, may also visit Balmoral this year. The royal rift has never been more evident. Harry and Meghan have not been invited to the summer home for years.
The Duke is currently involved in a lengthy court battle with the Home Office to reinstate his taxpayer-funded security in the UK.
Harry expected his father, Charles, to intervene on his behalf. He’s apparently emotionally blackmailing Charles, as he refuses to bring his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, to see their grandfather if Harry doesn’t have security. The King, who is undergoing cancer treatment, is unable to travel to California.
Harry’s calls to the monarch are also going unanswered, and they have not seen each other since Harry’s brief meeting with him in February.
The contention between Harry and his brother, William, remains a factor. The feuding brothers last spoke to each other at their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September 2022.
Harry said Balmoral was a paradise during his youth. Harry, William, and Charles would often vacation there during lazy summers. However, Balmoral also holds many upsetting memories for the Prince.
The Royals Went To Church Near Balmoral The Days After Diana’s Death
Balmoral is where the Queen died. It is also the place where he and William found out about their mother, Princess Diana’s death, on August 31, 1997.
Harry and William were awakened by Charles, who broke the heartbreaking news to them that their mother had been in a tragic accident and had passed.
The royals in Balmoral went to Crathie Kirk, a nearby church, the next day. On the way back to Balmoral Castle, the two grieving boys and their father stopped as people had been congregating all morning outside the front gates.
Many people left stuffed animals, flowers, and cards to commemorate Diana and let the family know they were not alone in their despair.
During those next few days, Harry found solace in the outdoors at Balmoral. He has long said that his connection with Scotland is complicated and forever deep due to his mother’s death.
When Reverand Robert Sloan of Crathie had given his sermon that morning, he had some kind words about Diana and the royal family,
“Today, as we always do, we prayed for the Prince of Wales and his children. His family is very much a part of this community, and the community loves them, and Diana is a part of the royal family so there is a great feeling of shock and sadness.”
