Realizing that the past is still a fresh memory for a lot of people, Prince Charles is skipping out on the Princess Diana statue unveiling event at Kensington Gardens this week because of what one insider calls “regretful memories.”
Prince William and Prince Harry will host the event themselves while their father Prince Charles will be several hundreds of miles away in Scotland instead. Here’s what you need to know.
According to the UK Times, Prince Charles is worried that the event could dredge up his painful past with Princess Diana, which of course includes their divorce and his very publicized affair with his current wife, Camilla Parker Bowles.

“He does find it terribly difficult,” the insider said. “These moments have the potential to resurface old wounds, and it brings back memories for him; happy, sad, regretful. Since Diana’s death, he has felt it’s best to keep those memories to himself and leave his sons to it.”
While both Prince William and Prince Harry will be at the event together, Prince Charles feels as though he has no reason to be there and that’s why he will be 400 miles away in his Scottish estate of Balmoral, instead.
And because the Duke of Sussex will only be in the UK for a short trip, there won’t be an opportunity for him to meet up with his father and his brother for a private and much-needed discussion between the three of them.
“Charles has made it quite clear he will not be around … because he is going to Scotland,” a source told the UK paper The Sun.
“There is no planned meeting between the three of them,” the insider said.
Now whether or not Prince William and Prince Harry will stand shoulder to shoulder or even speak to one another at the event remains to be seen. Watch this space.
