It seems that James and Jennifer Crumbley have decided to put in for a late admission for ‘parent of the year’ and have declined to pay for any legal counsel for their son, 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley, even after knowing full well what they unleashed upon the Oxford School District.
They have however decided to hire Shannon Smith, the same defense attorney as convicted Sex Offender Larry Nassar, for themselves.
Why have they refused to pay for their son’s legal team?
It seems they are trying to diminish culpability for themselves and distancing themselves from their son seems like a good idea. Although why they didn’t think about that when they were called to the school about a note with a gun on it saying ‘the thoughts won’t stop, please help me’ written by their son is beyond comprehension.

The gun that they purchased for their son was an early Christmas gift, and while they didn’t walk in the school and do the shooting themselves it was up to them to keep the guns safely out of reach of Ethan during school hours, one might argue. Especially since Ethan’s own Mother, Jennifer, texted him with “Ethan, don’t do it.” moments after she learned of the school being shot up.
There had been signs that something was going to happen before, in the week before the shooting there was a deer’s head thrown at the side of the school, along with a message written on one of the windows. A few days later they found a bird’s head in a bottle of urine outside the school as well, and that’s when the rumors that there was going to be a shooting started.
Someone on the school’s facebook page called the administration and tried to warn them, and said that the administration brushed it off and said, “It’s being handled.” but… clearly not. There was a failure on a lot of different levels here – but the root of the problem started with James and Jennifer Crumbley.
They claim not to have enough money to hire both a legal team for themselves and their son but that story sounds a little fishy, especially considering one of James’ ex came forward and said that while he was making six figures a year, she was having to beg him for $67 a week in child support.
It really doesn’t look like the money had anything to do with it, it looks like James and Jennifer Crumbley are just doing what they always do and looking out for themselves because that’s what they’ve done for the past 15 years.
If they hadn’t been, then their son wouldn’t be sitting in jail charged as an adult with them, and perhaps those four teenagers that lost their lives would still be here as well, looking forward to the holidays.
