Police have arrested a man for setting a Christmas tree on fire in New York. NYPD arrested a homeless man who set a 50-foot tree ablaze early Wednesday morning. Thankfully, no one was injured and the New York Fire Department was able to put it out quickly, however, the office building was still very smoky.
The tree had 10,000 ornaments on it, coupled with 100,000 lights that were just lit Sunday evening during a live ceremony. The flames damaged three other nearby trees that were also decorated. Crews are already taking down what’s left of the burned-down tree and FOX plans to immediately put up a new one.
Man Arrested For Arson For Setting FOX News Christmas Tree On Fire In New York!
49-year-old homeless man, Craig Tamanah, has been arrested and booked for criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, arson, disorderly conduct, and criminal tampering. Sources say the damages total around $500,000.
The Grinch tried to steal Christmas, but not this time!
A reason for setting the fire has yet to be disclosed.
This year, the holiday spirit seems particularly needed. With so much going on from politics to corona, and trials, it’s too much for many to take in. A little holiday cheer goes a long way and there’s something about seeing those lights bright on the tree that makes everything seem alright, if even just for a second.
As for how the damages reached half a million dollars, I’m not sure, but if there was a lot of smoke damage in the building, that might have done it.
What do you think? Why would Tamanah set the tree on fire and what if someone had gotten hurt? Let us know in the comments below.
