This girl had to work for it. Olivia Rodrigo has said she doesn’t think she is an overnight success, having “worked so hard for so long.” Here’s what she has to say.
After winning three Apple Music Awards, she said: “I think my whole life is just like changing in an instant and I don’t think my success by any means was like overnight just because you know, I’ve been writing songs since I was nine-years-old and working so hard for so long.”
Olivia Rodrigo Admits She Was Not An Overnight Success
Back in August, Olivia also admitted that she never thought she could become a pop star simply because she’s not white. Saturday Night Live star Bowen Yang asked Olivia about her Filipino American background and how she approaches her career with it.
The singer admitted that it’s “something incredible to think about.”“I sometimes get DMs from little girls being like, ‘I’ve never seen someone who looked like me in your position.’ And I’m literally going to cry, like, just thinking about it,” she told V Magazine. “I feel like I grew up never seeing that. Also, it was always like, ‘Pop star,’ that’s a white girl.”
With that said, Olivia added that she’s grateful that she’s no longer confined to just one genre of music.
“I am so inspired by so many different genres of music. I love country music so much, and I love rock music so much. And obviously pop music is my favorite,” the Disney star said. “And another thing that I think is really special is that, in 2021, I feel like artists aren’t really boxed into a genre anymore. I look at someone like Billie Eilish, who I’m so obsessed with, and her music is like pop, but it’s kind of rock, too.”
