NBC ‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers might be the only daytime television soap left with new episodes that will air well into the fall, but that might be the show’s biggest problem. According to the latest ratings numbers, daytime television fans are still tuning in the most to The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, despite the fact that they have both been airing classic and nostalgic episodes for well over a month now. Days of Our Lives, meanwhile, is still last in the ratings race. Here’s what you need to know.

Just this past week there was even a lot of chatter from soap fans online wondering exactly what the ratings race means for Days of Our Lives and the show’s future. While the soap certainly does have very loyal fans, it’s still nowhere near the other three daytime television dramas when it comes to the ratings race. And seeing how daytime viewers still prefer to see classic episodes of The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful over new episodes of Days of Our Lives, that might smell like trouble.

Some fan comments have included, “If Days ratings continue to fall when they are the only soap with new episodes it may end up looking worse to Sony executives than if their ratings fell when it was truly competing with 3 other soaps,” along with, “Sad that Y&R in reruns is keeping up with two current soaps, GH and DOOL. It even beat GH in one of the big demos.”

Another fan wrote, “You cannot expect your show to do well in the ratings if it’s built around 70-year-old characters in stories that were already written for them when they were in their 30s. That is Days’ problem. It has a writer who keeps writing stories from when he was a kid and doesn’t know how to write balanced stories featuring several generations.”

With that said, it will be interesting to see if ‘Days of Our Lives’ executive producer and head writer Ron Carlivati will make any changes to the soap, seeing how it’s still lagging behind the rest of the competition. Any changes that will be made won’t be seen until at least next year, as the series airs six months in advance.
