It looks like Meghan Markle really does consider herself someone important enough to call senators in her spare time. The Duchess of Sussex apparently lobbied a few Republican senators for paid family leave. Here’s what you need to know.
According to reports, Meghan called Joe Manchin’s West Virginia colleague, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, who said she first thought it was Manchin, because the caller ID was blocked.

“I’m in my car. I’m driving. It says ‘caller ID blocked’,” the senator recounted, details confirmed by her spokesman. “I thought it was Senator Manchin. His calls come in blocked. And she goes, ‘Senator Capito?’ I said, ‘Yes?’ She said, ‘This is Meghan, the duchess of Sussex.'”
If that weren’t enough, she also called Republican Susan Collins of Maine. She was at the gym at the time and also thought it was Manchin on the phone. “Much to my surprise, she called me on my private line and she introduced herself as the duchess of Sussex, which is kind of ironic,” Collins said. “I was happy to talk with her, but I’m more interested in what the people of Maine are telling me about it.”
Of course, it didn’t take very long for Meghan’s critics to blast her, especially since she used her royal title during the calls.
GB News host Colin Brazier wrote, “If you have to cold-call someone, impress them with the force of your argument. Not by trading on the royal title of an institution you and your husband have done so much to undermine.”
Another critic wrote, “Meghan Markle the American citizen can call senators all day long” — but “Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex has no place meddling in US politics.” So far Meghan Markle herself has not made any comments about the criticism.
