The court has begun hearing a case on whether the immigration record of Prince Harry should be opened due to his admissions regarding illegal drug use in his tell-all memoir, “Spare.”
The Heritage Foundation Claims that Prince Harry’s Drug Use is Pertinent Information
Prince Harry admitted to having used marijuana, cocaine, and magic mushrooms in his book. He said that using drugs helped him cope with the pain of losing his mother, the late Princess Diana.
The Heritage Foundation, a conventional think tank, has been attempting to force the Department for Homeland Security to release Harry’s documents, claiming they should be made public.
They are saying that the Duke of Sussex’s past drug use should have disqualified him from entering the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security’s John Bardo argued that the comments made in Harry’s book were not
“sworn testimony or proof”
that he took drugs.
Bardo reasoned,
“Just saying something in a book doesn’t make it true.”
He added that people always say things in books to sell copies.
Last week, Will Reeve interviewed Prince Harry on “Good Morning America.” When asked if he was thinking about becoming a citizen of the US, he responded,
“American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but isn’t something that’s a high priority for me right now.”
When applying for a US Visa, the applicant is asked if they have ever been a drug user or addict. They are also asked if they have ever violated any law involving the use or distribution of controlled substances.
The Heritage Foundation presented in a court filing that there was a question regarding whether the Department of Homeland Security had properly admitted the duke if he was thought to be an illegal drug user.
The Concern Is Whether Prince Harry Received Favorable Treatment Because He Is a Royal
The Heritage Foundation’s Center for Freedom director, Nile Gardiner, said that the idea that Harry faked his drug use to sell books was “ridiculous.” “This is Prince Harry’s book,” he exclaimed.
In the courtroom, it was suggested that there were only three potential ways that Harry was permitted to enter the US: he either lied about his drug use on the form, applied for a waiver, or came in by way of a diplomatic visa.
Bardo explained that Harry could have entered the US on a category A visa. It is given to government officials entering the country to carry out specific duties.
Harry is, after all, a member of the British royal family, and he is the Duke of Sussex, so he is technically a government official, even though he is not actually a working member of the royal family.
The main concern was whether DHS treated Harry favorably, considering he is a royal.
It would be a breach of privacy to release the records. The release would also show the kinds of official papers that Harry utilized. The information will include his admittance status and any immigration and non-immigration allowances he was attempting to gain.
Judge Carl J. Nicholas presides over the case and is expected to rule within the next few weeks.
