King Charles took his first trip overseas since his cancer diagnosis. He, Queen Camilla, and Prince William traveled to Normandy in France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-day at the United Kingdom Department of Defence and the Royal British Legion’s event.
Was A D-Day Turning Point That Helped Facilitate The End Of World War II
D-day was a turning point in history, as it helped to facilitate the defeat of the Nazis in World War II. US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were also in attendance. Rishi Sunak, Prime Minister of the UK, was also there.
Charles paid tribute to the soldiers during a brief speech,
“It’s a near impossible task to imagine the emotion of that day,”
Charles said of the veterans who landed on the coast of Normandy in the 1944 beach invasion.
“We are all eternally in their debt,”
His Majesty declared.
The royals greeted the veterans and talked to some of them. Veteran Benard Morgan signed up to be a soldier on his 18th birthday in 1942.
The monarch brought his grandfather, King George VI’s diary extract to read, which chronicled the events of June 6th, 1944. He also shared a picture of King George in Normandy. So many British soldiers were sacrificed in the war, and King Charles listened to several stories about the veterans who gave their lives fighting for freedom.
Mr. Morgan was the youngest RAF Sergent to land in Normandy, and he found out that the war ended when he decoded a secret telex that said,
“The German war is now over. The surrender is effective sometime tomorrow.”
Veteran Morgan, now 100 years old, came to Normandy this week with other former service members. Mr. Morgan, Arthur Osborne, John Dennett, and Jim Miller came to Normandy with mementos from their time in the war to show Charles, Camilla, and William.
Charles Left The International Commemorative Ceremony To William
Mr. Oborne was shot during the battle, but his good friend, Walter, saved his life. He showed King Charles his dog tags, which still had blood on some of them.
Unfortunately, Walter was killed just one day later. However, he said that he would never forget what his fellow soldiers did for him.
Mr. Dennett shared a picture of his wife, Joyce, with His Majesty. He wrote love letters to her throughout the war, and the two of them were married when he returned home.
Camilla spoke with Mr. Morgan, and he said he vividly recalled coming off the landing ship and seeing the Army gather the deceased soldiers who had drowned. He also discussed how he loved to play football with the other veterans to pass the time.
Veteran Joe Mines never wanted to return to Normandy again. He had too many memories of the war. However, he saw the 80th anniversary of D-day as an opportunity to commemorate the end of it.
Charles and Camilla did not attend the international commemorative ceremony in Saint-Laurant-sur-Mer, which allowed Willam to flex his muscles as heir to the throne.
The King’s doctors still want him to take it as easy as possible while he is still undergoing treatment for cancer. Charles is said to be on the mend and recovering well.
