Justin Timberlake wants everyone to know that what he has to say comes straight from the heart. There’s a new report that says the pop star wants everyone to know that his apology to both Britney Spears and Janet Jackson isn’t a publicty stunt. Instead, he means what he says. Here’s what you need to know.

In a statement posted to his Instagram account on Friday, the singer issued an apology to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson for “missteps” that he says contributed to “a system that condones misogyny and racism.”

This comes after the fallout he received following the release of the controversial documentary, “Framing Britney Spears.” Justin has also gotten a lot of criticism for his performance with Janet Jackson at the 2004 Super Bowl.

After Janet’s wardrobe malfunction, it was his actions or maybe even the lack thereof that contributed largely to Janet’s public scrutiny.

“I’ve seen the messages, tags, comments, and concerns and I want to respond. I am deeply sorry for the times in my life where my actions contributed to the problem, where I spoke out of turn, or did not speak up for what was right. I understand that I fell short in these moments and in many others and benefited from a system that condones misogyny and racism,” Justin said.

And now sources close to the Trolls actor says this isn’t about publicity. Instead, it’s about doing what’s right. “He did this on his own, and it’s really from the heart. This isn’t about publicity,” a source told Page Six.

Another source added that Justin Timberlake is serious about being a part of the solution.

“He realizes he needed to speak up and that it’s been long enough,” they said. “He knows that he has sometimes benefited from these moments, and that he should’ve said something sooner to defend both of them. He means it, and he’s very happy that he’s able to speak up now. It’s a bigger conversation and he wants to do his part to help move solutions forward.”
