When you fake a hate crime, it definitely gives you a little more popularity, but not in the way that you wanted. Former Empire star, Jussie Smollett is finding this is his fate right now. On Thursday, he was sentenced for the fake hate crime he took part in. He told police that he was attacked by two men because he is Black and homosexual.

He told police that these men poured bleach all over him, put a noose around his neck, and the entire time they were shouting racial and homophobic slurs at him. He said that they beat him while doing this as well. The jury was not kind to him and now the city of Chicago is suing him for $130,00 because of how much money they spent on trying to find the men who attacked him in this fake crime.

    Smollett’s Penalties

Smollett is going to face some pretty high fines and jail time. He may end up with a 15-year prison sentence for his crime. There are some that say since he has no criminal history, he may just have to pay an insane amount of fines. Even with these charges against him, the city of Chicago is not backing down.

The City of Chicago is Suing Jussie Smollett

They have revealed that when he contacted the police, they searched all over the city for the men who did this to him and did everything that they could to make sure he was OK. What did this cost? It cost the city of Chicago $130,106 and that is the amount that they will sue him for. The investigation had more than 12 officers working on it and they were paid 1,836 hours in overtime.

The city of Chicago gave a statement, “The city filed a civil lawsuit against Jussie Smollett to recover costs incurred by the Chicago Police Department investigating what the city believed to be Smollett’s also police reports that he was a victim of a hate crime. While using a different standard of proof, the jury’s finding of guilt convicting Jussie Smollett of criminal charges stemming from the incident confirms that the city was correct in bringing its civil lawsuit.”

They continued, “The city intends to continue to pursue its lawsuit to hold Smollett accountable for his unlawful actions and to demand that he compensate the city for the costs incurred by the Chicago Police Department which took false claims of harm seriously.”

It looks as if Smollett has gained attention, but not in the best way.
