American actor Jussie Smollett was found guilty of orchestrating a hate crime against himself, but that does not mean that he has no support out there.
Black Lives Matter Vows To Back American Actor Jussie Smollett
According to reports, Jussie now faces an uncertain wait over how long he could end up in jail. And yet, he can count on the support of Black Lives Matter to help him through this ordeal.
The organisation has been more vocal on the justice system following the acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse. Melina Abdullah, who happens to be the leader of the Los Angeles Black Lives Matter branch, has apparently stressed her support.
In an official statement, the organisation said: “We love everybody…We can never believe police, especially the CPD over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom.”
Although that is welcome news for Jussie, in reality, things are looking very difficult for him for the following reasons. First of all, he has been found guilty of five counts of disorderly conduct. Each of them has the potential to carry a prison sentence of 3 years.
This already shows that he could spend a significant amount of time in jail. Therefore, the only realistic thing is that a sentence could be reduced as opposed to a full exoneration.
Secondly, the Black Lives Matter movement has equally proven to be divisive. While it does command a significant amount of influence and support, the organisation has been called out for being violent.
Nevertheless, Jussie will not go down fighting. The actor has the opportunity to appeal this decision, and by the looks of it, plans are already being made in order to carry out a good defence.
Nenye Uche, who happens to be Jussie’s attorney, had this to say: “We are confident in our appellate system. We’re confident in our Illinois Supreme Court. We feel 100 percent confident that this case will be won on appeal.”
This case is not over yet, as the appeal could throw up another twist of events. The only thing we can do is wait for the authorities to rule on the matter.
