The Outsider premiered this week on HBO. The series, based on Stephen Kings’ novel of the same name follows a detective after his son is found slaughtered in the woods. All the evidence found, including fingerprints points to Terry Maitland. Maitland is beloved around the town. That’s why it’s so shocking to hear he’s involved with something like this.

What really turns the story is that Maitland is seen on a CCTV about 60 miles away at the time the murder was committed. How can someone be in two places at the same time? Thus, the thrill begins!

After much waiting and several teasers, we finally got to see it. Jason Bateman is nothing short of amazing. Little did most realize that he is also the director! In an interview, he discusses what it was like trying to adapt something from Stephen King. How much he’s learned and how he wanted the series to look overall. It’s an interesting interview and shows you the passion that Bateman has for the material and doing it justice on screen.

In the interview, Bateman discusses what style he wanted to portray for the series. While it is a Stephen King project, it’s not a traditional horror story. It plays more on the thrill and making you question reality. It’s along the same vein as King’s earlier work, The Shining, and Bateman allude to this as well. It’s about,

“Creating mood and dread, as opposed to horror. That makes an audience accept something that is other than what we are all exposed to everyday.”

Immediately after discussing how he wanted to craft the mood, he talks about King’s The Shining, and how this falls along the same line. Of taking something that is seemingly fit for reality, and twisting it ever so slightly, until you lose your mind.

He also pays tribute to the visual style of that in this new series. Bateman may have a long career in directing after this is all said and done. What he’s achieved in this series is already amazing. You combine that with his overall passion for the genre, and yearning to learn more. We may be witnessing the next mind in psychological thrillers. Who would have thought? The Outsider premiered January 12, and the ten-episode series plays Sunday evenings at 9. Only on HBO!
