HBO’s Westworld released back in 2016. It was an instant hit with its themes of morality and freedom. Based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie of the same name, Westworld boasts a brilliant cast and story. Among the stars is Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins and Golden Globe winner Ed Harris.
Fans have been anxiously awaiting the return of the show. Westworld had its second season finale way back in June of 2018. It’s been a long year and a half and we’re ready for more! Westworld is centered around a theme park. However, this isn’t just any theme park. The park is looked after by a complete team of robots. While the world is in peril and only the rich can afford to escape it. Westworld allows you to completely get away in their artificial consciousness. No dream or desire is too big here. Even the most illicit. Let your heart and mind run rampant, as there are no consequences here.
Michael Crichton And Theme Parks
Westworld was written and directed in 1973 by Michael Crichton. Crichton’s name, you’re probably familiar with. That’s because he was the writer of the novel Jurassic Park. Odd isn’t it? He seems to have a thing for theme parks, from artificial realities to dinosaur-filled nightmare rides.
The idea behind his stories is taking the controlled and escalating it until it’s completely uncontrollable. Theme parks, for instance, are incredibly tightly controlled places. They are regulated and constantly maintained, but still, place for happiness and excitement. Although, all it takes is one small bolt and the entire event changes.
It’s not just theme parks though. Some of his other stories, Prey, Andromeda Strain, and Sphere, while not amusement parks still dealing with the idea of control. They take place in science labs or high-tech security areas. These are places you least expect an error to occur. Though, this is how he draws the suspense. He takes the smallest grain of something and blows it up into a huge ordeal!
