It’s not the reaction we thought he would have, either! In fact, Gyllenhaal says that the song has ‘nothing to do with him’. Uh, what? “It’s about her relationship with her fans. It’s her expression. Artists tap into personal experiences for inspiration, and I don’t begrudge anyone that.”
Wow, that was… really mature of him! Okay, but granted, it’s been 10 years and Gyllenhaal has long since moved on and currently has a different girlfriend whom he’s happy with… so what is he really going to say that wouldn’t sound petty and childish?

When Taylor was asked a similar question back in 2021 on the Seth Meyer’s show when she first dropped the Red (TV) edition she said, “I really haven’t thought about their experiences.” meaning, she hasn’t thought about how her exes felt at all when releasing this music that was essentially about them.
In Taylor’s defense, writing music is a craft, and often times in art, you can use feelings that were caused by certain people and certain situations that could be interpreted to be based on them – but the finished product actually differs greatly from the actual events that went down. Anyone who’s ever done anything remotely creative will know that oftentimes, even when using an experience – it’s not often verbatim.
About the backlash he had gotten from Taylor’s fans online, Gyllenhaal went on to say, “At some point, I think it’s important when supporters get unruly that we feel a responsibility to have them be civil and not allow for cyberbullying in one’s name.” hm, okay, I guess he feels that it’s a two-way street, then?
He did say that even though he hasn’t listened to the re-recorded Album yet, he has realized what a good life he has with his current girlfriend. “Is this our future? Is anger and divisiveness our future? Or can we be empowered and empower others while simultaneously putting empathy and civility into the dominant conversation?”
Wow, at least Taylor knows how to pick nice, mature exes. Perhaps Kim Kardashian should hit her up for some dating tips… seems she could use some tips on how to find a man who is actually mature. Stay tuned!!!
