HBO's 'The Outsider' - With Writer Stephen King

HBO’s The Outsider releases January 12. It stars Jason Bateman as a likable small-town coach who is accused of murdering a young boy. The boy isn’t just anyone, however. As Ben Mendelsohn’s detective investigates Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman) for the murder, we learn the child was the detective’s kids. This is just the beginning of the tension however, as Terry seemingly appears to be in different places at once! While his prints are all over the crime scene, CCTV footage shows him 60 miles away at the same time.

Writer Stephen King mixes the reality in with the supernatural. Seemingly building the world from the ground up in reality, before throwing us into a world where anything is possible. HBO had King himself in to talk about his story and their adaptation.

In the interview, King talks about how he likes writing. Giving you just enough to believe something incredible could happen.

“You can make people believe if you have touchstones in the real world. Then, you introduce the element of the supernatural.”

He even gives a shoutout to the original Twilight Zone writers. It’s where he attributes a lot of his “writing chops”. King goes on to talk about the story of The Outsiders, and how he had the idea for a long time. The idea to have a person, who was in two different places at the same time.

King himself goes as far as to point out that he thinks the character of Holly is one of the most interesting in his entire lexicon of stories. There are a lot of strange things in this world, but he loves to ask the question, “How does a person cope with the unbelievable?” That is exactly what we ask throughout The Outsider as Detective Ralph Anderson (Mendelsohn) struggles to understand everything.

You will be able to take the adventure with everyone else in less than a week! HBO will be premiering the show with a two-episode special event. Get started with the story and if you haven’t read the book, ready to experience something you may have thought you never would.
