‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Julie Marie Berman Was My Favorite Lulu Spencer
We ask because they are all completely different. We want to know, in your opinion, who the definitive Lulu is.
Who is the Lulu that embodies the most qualities of her legendary parents, Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) and Laura Collins (Genie Francis)?
Personally, I was a huge fan of the first Lulu: Julie Marie Berman. She had that same signature Spencer spunk that Luke had, but still had the softness of her mother, Laura.
To me, Berman played a more laid-back version of the way Alexa is playing her now. I think that Emme Rylan is a solid actress, but she never really fit the role.
Berman’s Lulu had a lot of endearing qualities, but you also didn’t want to cross her. Alexa plays Lulu a bit on the harsh side.
While she’s obviously a terrific actress, she can barely contain her “in your face” personality. She definitely has Lulu’s stubborn streak down to a T. She’s a scrapper and is not to be messed with.
I also think Alexa has more chemistry with Josh Kelly, who plays everyone’s favorite “cowboy,” Cody Bell, on the soap. GH could easily explore a connection between the two characters.
Emme played Lulu as too sweet imo. Yet, she was really good at showing the lighthearted and delicate side of Lulu, but didn’t play every beat of Lulu the way Berman had. However, Emme mastered Lulu’s compassion.
She really seemed to have the magic touch. It was no surprise to me that she won three Daytime Emmy Awards for her spirited portrayal of Lulu.
Another reason I loved Julie was that I thought she had the most believable chemistry with Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamproga). I am not at all sold on Alexa’s Lulu with Dante.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Most GH Fans Have A Favorite Lulu
Julie’s portrayal of Lulu has the most heart. Not only did she click spectacularly with Dante, but also with her parents, Luke and Laura, as well as her on-screen brother, Lucky Spencer (Johnathan Jackson).
Not to mention, when Julie played Lulu, she had a hot-and-heavy affair with Johnny Zacchara (Brandon Barash), which I found irresistible and juicy.
For me, Francis, Geary, Jackson, and Berman were the iconic picture of the Spencer family. Some people never really get past the original actor who played the role first, but that’s not always the case.
For example, I think Laura Wright is the definitive Carly Spencer. She’s managed to capture every nuance of the character with heart and fire in equal measure.
Yet, I still think of Julie as the “true blue” Lulu. She seemed to balance the best (and not-so-flattering) traits of Lulu perfectly. Plus, the writing for Lulu may have been better back then.
Emme is admittedly a beautiful actress, and many people loved her softer version of Lulu. She almost seemed like an entirely different character in my mind.
The fans have different opinions on which Lulu is their Lulu. Emme has a strong fanbase, and Alexa has built her own following. Granted, all the actresses who played Lulu have their attributes and brought their own special flavor to the role.
Don’t get me wrong, but most GH fans have a favorite Lulu. Whose is yours? Did you prefer the spunky, fiery Julie Marie Berman, the sweet and good-natured Emme Rylan, or the fresh and fierce energy of Alexa Havins Breuning?
