‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers: It’s official. The powers that be at GH have lost their minds. Killing off Austin Gatlin (Roger Howarth) would have only been an acceptable decision if GH was planning on bringing back Franco or Todd.
It looks like there is a major “Who Done It” story in the works at GH. The question is, who killed Austin? But the truth is many GH fans are too heartbroken over the loss of goldmine Roger Howarth even to care.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The Wrong Characters Are Being Killed
One of them is writing this article right now.
A “Who Done It story” in the same spirit as “Who Shot JR?” from the nighttime drama “Dallas” will surely excite some viewers, but what they should have done is have someone kill off Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs).
The character was beyond deplorable, and since she couldn’t be redeemed after what she did to Sasha Corbin (Sofia Mattsson), she should have been killed off.
There’s your who-done-it story. Enough people hated Gladys, and really, it could have been anyone.
Murder mysteries should be reserved for characters everyone hates. There is also potential for more stories if it goes in that direction.
In 2023, GH killed three unforgettable characters: Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) was the first. The way she died was offensive.
Being scratched with a poison hook by Heather Webber (Alley Mills) was bad enough, and then going back to the Haunted Star to die in her mother, Liesel Obrecht‘s (Kathleen Gati) arms, was gut-wrenching.
It was very dark material and very well acted by Thiebaud and Gati, but watching a character with so much potential just be killed off like that was painful. However, Britt’s birthday party before her demise was spectacular.
Then, there was Sasha’s husband, Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor). He also died by the hook, a useless storyline with zero payoff.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Big Mistake GH
The only thing that came out of the hook story is that the characters we care about were killed. However, the show is doing a fine job with Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) and Sasha’s slow-to-build romance. If anyone can mend Sasha’s heart, it will be the funny and handsome cowboy, Cody.
Still, Brando’s death occurred right after poor Sasha’s baby died, and it was a shock.
Now, GH is stupid enough to let go of Roger Howarth.
Granted, Austin was not a character that took with the fans. It might have something to do with a particular lollipop-licking cousin—too many scenes with him and not enough scenes with anybody else. Fans weren’t too happy about what Austin did to Ava Jerome (Maura West), but they could have easily redeemed a character like Austin. It wouldn’t have been a big stretch of the imagination.
Austin was more like a wasted character than a bad one, and the writing for an actor of Howarth’s caliber should have been better.
As mentioned earlier, Howarth could have returned as Franco or Todd, but the show looked at a brilliant actor and decided, meh. Let’s just kill him off.
Big mistake, GH. 2023 has been a year of killing off good characters. Let’s hope 2024 makes up for it.
