‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers indicate that Maurice Benard, who plays the mafia mogul, eh, we mean, coffee importer Sonny Corinthos, on the show, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor for a Daytime Emmy.
Soap Opera Digest caught up with Maurice and got the inside scoop on how he feels about his nomination and how excited he is for the big night.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Maurice is Proud of His Bipolar Storyline
The magazine asked Maurice where he was and what he was doing when he discovered he was nominated.
“I found out on Twitter, and then Frank Valentini called, and we had a good conversation. Listen, it’s fantastic! I’m very proud of the story I submitted scenes from because it’s a bipolar story. It happened so long ago that I think people forgot about it. My wife isn’t impressed with pretty much anything I do. (laughs).”
Maurice continued that he showed his wife these scenes as she was impressed by how real it was. He was very proud of that.
When talking about the scenes he submitted for his Emmy highlight reel, the actor says that he is using scenes with Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) and a scene with Carly Spencer (Laura Wright).
When speaking of his scenes depicting Sonny as bipolar, he says,
“I’ve done other manic things in the past that were not as real, like over the top, a bit. But what I loved about this story is that it was as it really would be. Those scenes in the club were filled with high, high, high, anger, anger, anger, and nice, nice, nice, hug, hug, hug, hug. All that stuff is what happens when you’re manic! And it ends with Sonny breaking down to Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) and crying.”
When asked what he’s looking forward to on Emmy night, Maurice says that he has found peace within himself, so it doesn’t matter if he “wins.”
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Maurice is Just Happy to Be There
He feels that he feels 100 percent better the way he feels now because his happiness doesn’t depend on “getting things.” He says he’s just happy to be there.
Maurice says he will have a speech prepared in case he does win because he’s experienced not having a speech, and as he put it, “it’s not fun.”
Maurice Benard has received three Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor. The first time he won was in 2003, again in 2019, and again in 2021.
The last two times Maurice won were for Sonny’s father, Mike Corbin’s (Max Gail) Alzheimer’s storyline. He said it was extremely difficult for him at the time because his father was struggling with Alzheimer’s, and eventually, he passed.
Radio City Music Hall erupted when the actor won his first Emmy award in 2003. There wasn’t one person not cheering him on.
Maurice is an accomplished actor and wrote a book called, “Nothing General About It: How Love (and Lithium) Saved Me On and Off General Hospital.” The book chronicles his experience with bipolar disorder.
Maurice also has an incredible podcast called “State of Mind.” He brings guests on his show to discuss challenging and personal topics.
We’ll all be rooting for you, Maurice!
