“I saw this post from NAMI today and just had to speak about it…

I’ve been struggling with mental illness for over 30 years and I understand how difficult and unbearable this illness can be.

Fortunately, I’ve always been one to seek help, stay on my medication and I’ve always had a family who truly love me and supported me no matter what.

I’ve seen way too much heartache in the last 30 years we have to understand this is not just the “oh he’s just going through something” or “oh he’s just a little crazy right now” illness. This is the ‘oh he or she is not with us anymore’ disease.

I don’t know the fix it. I wish I did. All I know is we all have to keep our eyes, ears and our hearts open to the signs.”

We are very proud of Maurice, he has beaten many barriers out of his his way. He is very successful and productive even though he suffers from mental illness. Benard is also a mental health advocate and wants more people to get involved with mental health. Benard said that his family has always been very supportive of him and that his wife has been a huge support for him to get through all of his “mania” moments. Throughout all of their problems, and his mania, his wife discussed how she has never ever thought about leaving Maurice the entire marriage, she said she would never do that to him, no matter what. She understands that the moods, anger, mania, violence, is all a part of his disorder.

Maurice Benard has shown everyone that he is very strong and courageous. He has a willingness to keep on going throughout his illness, is amazing. He has a great support system and an amazing actor. He is truly an admirable human being and he is extremely strong to speak up for mental illness, instead of being secretive and quiet about it. Watch Maurice Benard weekdays on GH.
