‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers reveal that Laura Wright is celebrating 19 years of playing Carly Spencer. On November 4, 2005, Laura Wright landed what is arguably the role of her career.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Carly Has Come A Long Way
Carly is a formidable character whose tenure in Port Charles hasn’t been easy. Sarah Joy Brown played Carly as a troublemaker, man-eater, and one-woman wrecking ball.
When Tamara Braun took over the role, she wisely added layers of complexity and nuance to Carly, making her a more vulnerable character. The audience started to defend and be fiercely loyal to Carly.
Jennifer Bransford briefly played Carly. She was a talented actress, but she wasn’t right for the part. The audience didn’t respond favorably to her portrayal of the character.
When Wright came onto the canvas, she knew she had big shoes to fill. Wright made Carly her own, and her performance is set apart from other Carlys in the past.
Wright plays every beat of Carly as a strong and impressive heroine. Someone loyal to a fault toward the people she loves but doesn’t take any guff from anyone.
Carly will fight anyone threatening her family, and heaven help you if you try. Wright’s Carly has matured and evolved over the years; She started with a little attitude and a lot of unrestrained spunk. Now, she’s mastered the art of self-control.
Wright started her soap career playing Allison (Allie) Rescott on Loving. When Loving was canceled, she was one of the few cast members chosen to move to the sudser, The City.
She played Reva Shayne‘s (Kim Zimmer) sister, the stripper who later became a princess, Cassie Winslow. Wright was more than excited to play Carly. She was up for the challenge of playing a character who some love to hate and others revere. But, yes, she made the role her own.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Wright Earned The Respect Of The Audience
Wright had instant chemistry with her co-star, Maurice Benard, who plays her on-again, off-again husband and mafia boss Sonny Corinthos. Carly knew how to be a mobster’s wife, and Wright made it work.
Wright and Benard beautifully played up Sonny and Carly’s magnetic connection. In an interview with Michael Fairman TV, Wright talked about her early days as Carly Corinthos and how she felt about her performance:
“I showed up every day, ready to kick a**, but as far as feeling like, “Haha, it’s mine! I’ve made it! I never felt that.”
She had dutifully studied her predecessor’s work and learned what the audience loved about Carly. She wanted to add elements of Carly’s previous portrayers into her work.
However, she also knew she had to win over the audience on her terms, which is precisely what she did. Wright admitted,
“I absolutely loved the dynamic between Carly, Sonny, and Jason. It was so unhealthy and destructive, and it was a perfect soap dynamic because it created problems for every other relationship they had.”
Wright earned the audience’s respect, and now, no one can imagine anyone else playing Carly. Wright’s portrayal of Carly epitomizes everything a good soap character should be: fascinating, compelling, and a force to be reckoned with.
