‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers indicate that Drake Hogestyn’s time in Salem playing Marlena Evans’s (Deidre Hall) leading man, John Black, was fascinating and packed with high-stakes drama and action.
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: John Was Introduced As “The Pawn”
In November 1985, Days introduced the character “The Pawn,” whom Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) named because he was good at chess. The character was wrapped in bandages and was recovering from reconstructive facial surgery.
Hogestyn first appeared on Days as “The Pawn” in January 1986. He assumed the name John Black after seeing the alias on a war memorial.
Initially, his role was supposed to be brief. However, the actor made quite an impression on the powers that be and fans of the show.
Part of his appeal was Hogestyn’s chemistry with Deidre Hall. John Black took a job at Salem University Hospital, where he met Marlena. Their relationship developed when Marlena counseled him.
Bo Brady (Peter Reckell) believed that John was Stefano, but Marlena discovered evidence that John was really Roman Brady (then Wayne Northrop). Fortunately, Marlena was able to stop Bo from killing him.
The fans were diehard Roman and Marlena fans. Still, it was later revealed that Stefano brainwashed John into believing he was Roman, and Northrop, the original Roman, returned to the show.
Even though Roman and Marlena got back together, the pull between John and Marlena was magnetic, and they ended up having an affair, which resulted in baby Belle Black (last played by Martha Madison).
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: John Saved Marlena From The Devil
When the devil possessed Marlena, John was the one who saved her. He had been brainwashed to believe he was a priest, and in 1995, John performed an exorcism on Marlena, and he helped her defeat Satan.
Any other couple would have been doomed because of what John and Marlena went through, but they always prevailed. The couple were married in 1999, and Hope Brady (Kristen Alfonso), who believed she was Princess Gina, kidnapped John and brought him to a submarine.
Gina became pregnant and knew there was a possibility that either John or Stefano could be the father. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when Hope’s true love, Bo, was revealed to be the father.
John and Marlena were wed in their first legal marriage in December 2006. In 2007, Stefano ordered his son, EJ DiMera (then played by James Scott), to kill John. EJ shot him and had him run down by a car. He was believed to have died in Marlena’s arms. It was later discovered that Stefano faked John’s death.
In 2023, Dick Van Dyke had a guest role on the soap, playing John’s biological father, Timothy Robicheaux. The role came to be when Van Dyke linked up with Hogestyn, who went to the same gym as him. Their close friendship translated well on-screen.
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Hogetyn’s Leading Lady, Deidre Hall, Pays Tribute To Him
Deidre Hall, who’s been Hogestyn’s leading lady for almost forty years, had beautiful and poignant words to say of Drake Hogestyn’s passing,
“For nearly four decades, Marlena Evans and I have loved the same man. Marlena’s John is an iconic hero, unfailingly rescuing her from all matters of villains. My acting partner was incredibly professional from the moment he entered the studio; flawless in his preparation and ready for any eventuality in any scene.”
She continued,
“He was gracious and kind to everyone, from the executive staff to the night crew. Drake loved what he did and adored and respected everyone with whom he did it. Having said that, we always knew that his two greatest loves were his family and the Yankees….”
She ended her tribute by saying,
“We will continue, as he always encouraged us, to swing for the fences.”
