After social media erupted, a Minnesota concert venue strangely canceled Dave Chappelle‘s performance, which it had scheduled for Wednesday night. The comedian was scheduled to perform on Wednesday at First Avenue, a well-known venue in downtown Minneapolis, but his sold-out performance was canceled hours beforehand.

Tickets for Chapelle’s show went on sale Monday and sold out in 5 minutes on Tuesday, but some people took to social media to express their displeasure with First Avenue hosting Dave due to his contentious Netflix special. The announcement read that, “The Dave Chappelle show tonight at First Avenue has been cancelled and is moving to the Varsity Theater.” The statement continued, “We believe in diverse voices and the freedom of artistic expression but in honoring that, we lost sight of the impact this would have. We know there are some who will not agree with this decision.”

First Ave claims they heard the criticism and changed their tune after realizing they had let people down by not upholding the “highest standards.” The location claims to be a secure area, but it seems to have forgotten the impact a Chappelle show would have. What’s strange is that the location had to be aware of Dave’s special appearance, his subsequent appearances, and the controversy they all caused.

Dave will still perform in Minneapolis on Wednesday, just not at First Avenue; according to the venue, his performance has been moved to the Varsity Theater in Dinkytown. It will be interesting to see how Chappelle’s week develops because he has two more shows at Varsity Theater scheduled for Thursday and Friday.
