CNN has reported a new species of neon orange toadlets that have been discovered in the mountains of Brazil. They’re very small, just an inch and part of the pumpkin toadlet genus. These toadlets are fluorescent and poisonous. The fluorescent color can be seen with UV light.
This comes by way of Ivan Nunes, professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at São Paulo State University in Brazil.
“A new species of tiny, neon orange toadlets was discovered in the mountains of Brazil. They’re just under an inch and part of the pumpkin toadlet genus, a collection of tiny, bright-colored toads, according to a study published Wednesday in PLOS ONE. These toadlets are poisonous and fluorescent, which can be seen with UV light, said study author Ivan Nunes, professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at São Paulo State University in Brazil.”
“Cute, But Poisonous” New Species Of Toad Found In Brazil Called ‘Pumpkin Toad’
Of course, the comments were filled with comments and jokes about ‘Pokemon’, their ex’s and more. However, this is a pretty impressive discovery and one that I’m sure Ivan Nunes will be talking about for years.
There are many species and animals out there that have yet to be discovered, especially in the ocean. It’s cool that in 2021 we can still say we’re discovering new creatures and hopefully one of these little guys doesn’t make it too far up north. I don’t want to have to worry about cute, poisonous toads from the pumpkin toad genus.
