Four rowdy fans were removed from Atlanta’s State Farm Arena during the fourth quarter of the Hawks/ Lakers game on Monday night. Almost instantly the instigator, later identified as Juliana Carlos was dubbed Courtside Karen.
It was Carlos’ husband, Chris Carlos who started the heckling of NBA super star LeBron “King” James. When James responded Juliana pulled down her face mask and became belligerent. Several exchanged were made between the couple and James before NBA referees paused the game. Juliana flipped the double bird as she, her husband and two friends were escorted from the game.

After the game, which the Lakers won 107-99 James tweeted, “Courtside Karen was MAD MAD!!”

The ‘Courtside Karen’ also took to social media but her alcohol fueled and expletive filled Insta-stories have since been deleted.
For his part, LeBron seemed almost energized by the ruckus, telling reporters “At the end of the day, I’m happy fans are back in the building. I miss that interaction. I need that interaction. We, as players, need that interaction.”
He also almost defended the couple, saying he did not believe it was warranted for the Carloses to be kicked out of the game. “They might have had a couple drinks, maybe,” he acknowledged. “I think the referees did what they had to do.”
While James was amused, Lakers coach Frank Vogel was not, namely due to the fact that Carlos removed her mask amongst a global pandemic.
“It certainly exposed something with regard to having fans in the pandemic,” Vogel said. “You obviously can’t have fans taking their masks down and shouting at our players with the virus out there during these times.”
This is not the first sporting event where mask removal has been an issue. Trey Songz got into a physical altercation with security guards before being forcibly removed from a Kansas Chiefs NFL game. The rapper claims he had only removed his mask to eat.
