Sarah Ferguson turned 65 today. She was born on October 15, 1959, to Ronald Ferguson and Susan Wright. Her father, Ronald, was a military veteran and was also (then) Prince Charles’s polo manager.
Her mother, Susan, was a documentary filmmaker. Sarah also had an older sister named Jane. Her parents separated in 1972 after her mother left her father for Argentinian polo player Hector Barrantes. When her mom left home, it affected Sarah, as she became very depressed.
When Sarah was 17, her father married a farmer’s daughter named Sue Deptford. In the summer of 1985, Sarah met Prince Andrew, who had been nicknamed “Randy Andy” due to his reputation as a “ladies’ man.”
Sarah and Andrew met through Princess Diana, with whom she had a very close relationship. In October 1986, she married the Duke of York in a fairytale wedding. During their marriage, Andrew was often away for long periods in the Navy.
The couple’s first daughter, Beatrice, was born in August 1988, and her other daughter, Eugenie, was born in March 1990. Andrew and Sarah separated in 1992, and their divorce was finalized by May 1996.
Sarah Ferguson Celebrated Her Birthday With Princess Beatrice At A Lady Garden Foundation Lunch
The Duchess of York said this has been “a year of recovery and growth.” Sarah had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, which is a form of skin cancer, in January 2024, months after undergoing a single mastectomy for breast cancer, which was diagnosed in June 2023.
At the time she was diagnosed with skin cancer, she credited her daughters for helping her get through that difficult period.
“With the love and support of my family, especially my girls, Beatrice and Eugenie, I have stayed positive and been informed that my outlook is good.”
Today, Sarah Ferguson celebrated her birthday by championing a cause close to her at the tenth anniversary of the annual Lady Garden Foundation Lunch. The Lady Garden Foundation is a UK women’s health charity focused on gynecological cancer.
The foundation held the event at Langan’s Brasserie in London’s Mayfair. She was joined by her oldest daughter, Princess Beatrice. Model and actress Elizabeth Hurley and the legendary Joan Collins were in attendance.
Sarah Received A Touching Birthday Message From Princess Eugenie
This morning, Sarah’s younger daughter paid a sweet tribute to her mom for her milestone birthday. She shared an Instagram post comprised of several photos of the Duchess.
The carousel opened with snaps of Sarah Ferguson spending time with Eugenie and her son, August. In another picture, Sarah was pictured with Eugenie and her other daughter, Beatrice, who recently announced that Sarah was about to be a grandmom to another baby, as Beatrice is pregnant with her second child.
The caption read,
“Happy Birthday to my beautiful mumma. So proud of the Grannie you are, the mum you are and the woman you are. You’re an inspiration, and our endless chats bring me so much happiness and incredible support,”
Eugenie wrote.
Sarah posted this message on Instagram earlier today:
“Thank you for all of your wonderful birthday wishes! I’m feeling incredibly grateful to be here every day, to smell the flowers, to read and write, and to be able to see my daughters and my grandchildren. It has been an extraordinary year, a year of recovery and growth, and I just feel so lucky. Thank you again to all of you who made it so and who took the time to send me birthday wishes.”
