The heavyweight boxing scene has been a confusing mindfield to understand for much of the year, with seemingly, the only fighter happy to step back into the ring being Tyson Fury. The Gypsy King was last in the ring earlier in the year as he brutally knocked out Deontay Wilder, and inflicted a first defeat on his perfect record.
Fury’s performance was one of the very best that we have seen in the heavyweight division in this modern era, and there was shock when it was revealed that Wilder would be exercising his right for a trilogy fight. That decision dampened all hope that we could potentially see a dream unification bout between Fury and fellow British fighter Anthony Joshua.
Boxing News: Wilder/Fury In Doubt
However, fight fans have been given fresh hope that we could potentially see the unification fight this year as there are fear that Fury/Wilder could be called off due to the current pandemic. Wilder and Fury are currently scheduled to fight on December 19th, which is nearly 12 months after their first meeting back in 2019 that ended in a controversial draw.
Meanwhile, Joshua himself is also scheduled to fight in December, with his fight against Kubrat Pulev taking place seven days earlier. However, both fights now appear to be in doubt, which has led Fury to claim that he would be willing to fight Joshua before the end of the year and then give Wilder his re-match next year.
Boxing News: British Unification Fight Closer Than Ever
There have been huge steps towards making the fight happen over the past year, with both parties reportedly agreeing on terms for the fight. Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that Joshua and Fury would fight on two occasions, with both bouts coming in 2021. However, Fury’s latest comments could mean that the first fight may happen sooner than expected.
Regardless of the plans, Fury was insistent that he would be fighting again before the end of the year. He also teased that if the fight against Wilder can’t happen in Vegas, then he would be happy to take on the American again back in the United Kingdom. Fury also revealed that he didn’t care if there was a crowd in attendance or not, he just wants to fight before the end of the year. However, it is unknown yet whether the promoters will be able to come to terms for a fight.
