‘Beyond The Gates’ Spoilers: Tunie’s First Soap Role Was Jessica Griffin On As The World Turns
Tamara Tunie is a veteran of the iconic soap, “As the World Turns.” She played attorney Jessica Griffin on and off from 1987 to 1995.
Tunie reprised the role from 1999 to 2007. She returned briefly in 2009. Longtime soap fans will know Jessica made an indelible mark in Oakdale, was linked to several major characters, and was part of a core African American family.
Tamara received nominations for the NAACP Image Awards. The award was for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series in 2003 and 2004.
As the show’s matriarch, Tunie joins the cast of the upcoming soap Beyond the Gates. Longtime soap fans who remember her on As the World Turns were thrilled at the prospect of seeing an old friend in a new, groundbreaking soap.
Beyond the Gates is the first African American soap since Generations, and it was only on from 1989 to 1991. The show was canceled due to low ratings.
In a market that preferred a more “familiar” and “typical” soap style, the world apparently wasn’t ready for Generations in the 80s.
But we are ready to embrace the fresh and exciting Beyond the Gates. Now, it has every chance of success critically, especially in the ratings wars.
The new soap holds the coveted spot of 2 pm, a cushy time slot ironically filled by As the World Turns before its cancellation, after soap giants, “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful.”
