‘Beyond the Gates’ spoilers reveal that BTG is celebrating its one-year anniversary today. On February 24, 2025, we were introduced to the wealthy and prominent Dupree family. The show’s premiere coincided with Black History Month.
‘Beyond the Gates’ Spoilers: Michele Val Jean Is the Creator and Head Writer of the Show
Fairmont Crest is the fictional town where the show is set. And BTG began by featuring its longest-running feud so far: Dani Dupree (Karla Mosely) vs. Hayley Lawson Hamilton (Marquita Goings).
Dani gave Hayley a well-deserved slap for stealing her husband, Bill Hamilton (Timon Kyle Durrett). It was an epic moment and a fantastic and soapy opening to this fresh new show.
The slap heard round the soap world kicked off this groundbreaking new show, created by head writer Michele Val Jean, whose impressive credentials include being co-head writer of General Hospital.
Val Jean was named co-head writer of GH alongside Elizabeth Korte, becoming the first African-American to hold this position in daytime history.
Known for the 1998 revisitation of Luke Spencer’s (Tony Geary) rape of Laura Collins (Genie Francis), she was the reason the soap finally addressed Luke’s infamous “seduction” of Laura on the disco dance floor and called it what it was: sexual assault.
‘Beyond the Gates’ Spoilers: BTG Is the First African American Focused Soap Since Generations
Val Jean won four Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series for her work on GH. Following her time at GH, she wrote for The Bold and the Beautiful.
The soap scribe then created the first hour-long African American-focused daytime drama, Beyond the Gates, which premiered on this day last year.
BTG is the first African American soap since the half-hour-long Generations. Sadly, Generations only lasted for under two years because the world wasn’t ready for it.
It was the first soap to feature a Black family as central characters. Generations ran from March 1989 to January 1991. Sadly, the show tanked in the ratings. It was up against the second half-hour of The Young and the Restless, which has inexplicably dominated the ratings for decades.
Interestingly, Michele Val Jean got her start writing for daytime TV, on Generations. She famously wrote the epic cat fight between Maya Reubens (Vivica A. Fox) and Doreen Jackson (Jonelle Allen).
Val Jean was devastated when the show was canceled, which led to the creation of Beyond the Gates decades later.
‘Beyond the Gates’ Spoilers: BTG Actors Are Floored to Be a Part of this Groundbreaking Show
In an interview with Variety’s Strictly Business podcast, the executive producer of BTG acknowledged that she had long dreamed of a show like this becoming a reality.
Ducksworth explained that she was first introduced to General Hospital as a child. Watching GH had inspired her to play an integral role in the world of daytime television.
Actress Tamara Tunie, who plays the matriarch of the Dupree family, Anita Dupree, said that participating in a show like this was “the only thing that would bring her back to daytime tv.”
Karla Mosely, who plays Dani Dupree, said,
“I’ve been on soaps before, but I’ve never had anything like this. I’ve never had people follow me on social media and talk to me like so intricately as though I am the character.”
Clifton Davis, who plays the patriarch, Vernon Dupree gushed,
“I’m old enough to have lived through a bunch of history, and I’ve seen African American experiences in the arts. I’ve watched it grow from almost nothing to what it is today.”
Davis also called BTG
“the cherry on top of his career.”
Due to the decline in soap operas in recent years, Michele Val Jean didn’t think much would come of BTG. It started simply as a project during COVID.
However, the show has far surpassed expectations and was renewed for a second season. The show has been critically acclaimed and has become a force on the daytime television landscape.
