Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton’s approaches to being taught the rules of royal life were vastly different.
The Queen Thought Meghan Would Be “A Breath Of Fresh Air”
When one marries into the royal family, it can take years to acquire a sufficient grasp on proper etiquette and how to navigate public events.
When Meghan wed Prince Harry in May 2018, the late Queen Elizabeth II knew she would require help to transition into life in the Firm.
The Queen genuinely believed that Meghan, a biracial young woman and American celebrity, would be a “breath of fresh air” and a welcome addition to the royal family.
So naturally, when the Queen suggested that Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, could teach Meghan the royal ropes, the Queen thought Meghan would want to take advantage of the opportunity to learn.
Sophie is married to the Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward. Sophie and Edward endured their fair share of scrutiny and scandal. Edward was involved in theater and television production, while Sophie enjoyed success in her PR business.
The scandal they precipitated occurred when Sophie was tricked by an undercover reporter posing as a potential client, who duped her into saying some incriminating things about the royal family.
It created a firestorm, which infuriated the Queen. Not to mention Prince Edward’s royal embarrassment, “It’s a Royal Knockout,” which humiliated the monarchy.
These days, Sophie is one of the most prominent and vital members of the royal family. The wisdom she gained through her mistakes could have served as a valuable lesson for Meghan.
Unfortunately, Sophie and Meghan never developed that relationship because Meghan insisted the only help she needed was from her husband, Harry.
She never considered that she could benefit from a mentor. After all, Meghan was a self-made woman who was better than all of them, as she had big plans to reinvent the monarchy.
Kate Acclimated Into The Firm With Poise And Grace
Remember, the royal family has been a mainstay for centuries, and Meghan was overconfident, believing she could change the rules.
Insiders who experienced Meghan’s “messiah complex” claim that she
“had plans for her life as a working royal that were not compatible with the approved program.”
Conversely, Kate Middleton acclimated to the Firm with poise and grace. She officially joined the royal family in April 2011 when she married Prince William.
The Palace Staff described her as
“someone who slowly and carefully absorbs the atmosphere of the place, the relationship between people, and the rules.”
Kate carefully observed the royals and allowed Sophie to become her mentor. Sophie is the quintessential example of someone who transitioned from a “normal life to that of a royal with success.”
It didn’t take long for Kate and Sophie to bond like sisters. The two of them share the same sense of humor. Sophie was also a great comfort to Kate when she was going through her cancer ordeal.
Royal experts have noted that Meghan is incredibly “self-obsessed” and “temperamental.” These negative traits are the complete opposite of Kate’s more easygoing and inquisitive personality.
Royal author Tina Brown suggests that Meghan’s “dramatic fall from grace” occurred due to her having
If Meghan hadn’t been so determined to come in and change the institution, she might have been a success in her royal role.
