Kate Middleton has opened up about her cancer ordeal. She has described it as “Life-changing” and treatment and recovery as a “rollercoaster.”
Kate “Put On” A “Brave Face” Through Cancer Treatment
She said she
“put on a ‘brave face”
through cancer treatment and recovery, where
“Everybody expects you to be better, but that’s not the case at all.”
The Princess of Wales is making a slow and measured return to her royal duties. She’s in remission from cancer and felt there was an expectation for her to “get back to normal.”
Kate explained that the “very scary, very daunting experience” didn’t end with the conclusion of her treatment. She said she had to take the time to find her “new normal.”
Kate also divulged her experience trying acupuncture, which is a traditional Chinese medicine technique and alternative form of medicine where tiny needles are inserted into the skin.
The needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points on the body to promote the flow of energy, facilitate natural healing, and alleviate pain. She decided to try it as part of her recovery process.
The deeply personal words from Kate came as she met fellow cancer patients at a cancer wellbeing center at Colchester Hospital.
Kate helped to plant roses in the garden to help visitors find peace. The visit was her first public appearance since pulling out of Royal Ascot.
Kate Feels Holistic Healing And The “Mind, Body, And Spirit Approach” Is Significant
The Princess also spoke of the significance of a holistic “mind, body, and spirit approach.” Kate said that while she had completed her treatment successfully, she’s still unable to function up to her former potential.
The Princess emphasized the importance of patience and their family being able to find support through their illness.
The center provides therapy, holistic treatments, and community groups. The visit provided patients with the benefit of Kate’s insight and wisdom gained from her own cancer journey.
The place also offers massage, reflexology, a family practitioner, wig fittings, and a choir. A group of patients told the Princess how much the center has helped them.
Kate spoke to them about how cancer affected her,
“It’s life-changing for anyone.”
She reflected.
“Through first diagnosis or post-treatment and things like that, it is a life-changing experience for both the patient and the family as well.”
“And actually, it sometimes goes unrecognized, you don’t necessarily, particularly when it’s the first time of diagnosis, appreciate how much impact it’s going to have.”
“You have to find your new normal, and that takes time.”
Kate said.
“It’s a rollercoaster. It’s not one smooth plane, which you expect it to be.”
She continued,
“But the reality is, it’s not, you go through hard times.” Kate spoke of the value of support.”
“And to have a place like this to have the support network, through creativity and singing and gardening or whatever it might be, so valuable, and it’s great this community has it.”
Funds from the Five Hundred Catherine’s Rose plants Will Be Donated To The Royal Marsden Center.
Kate spoke to patients whose cancer had returned and to someone who had lost her husband to cancer. Catherine asked how the center had helped them.
After speaking at the center, Catherine moved into RHS’s Wellbeing Garden at Colchester Hospital, where she helped plant roses named after her.
The Princess believes in the healing power of nature. She has made it a personal mission to raise awareness about how nature brings us joy and “supports our mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.”
The visit was accompanied by a donation of 50 Catherine’s Rose plants, named in honor of the Princess by the Royal Horticultural Society. The funds from sales will go to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.
A total of 500 of Catherine’s Rose plants will be given to wellbeing and community gardens throughout the UK this summer.
In January, after visiting the Royal Marsden, Kate expressed that it was “a relief to be in remission” and that she would “remain focused on recovery.”
