Heartbroken Prince Harry resigned from the Sentable African charity he founded twenty years ago after controversy forced him to step down.
Prince Harry And His Relationship With Chandauka “Broke Down Beyond Repair”
Harry’s relationship with chairwoman, Dr. Sophie Chandauka, “broke down beyond repair.” The Duke of Sussex co-founded Sentable with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, which was established in honor of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.
Harry’s charity helped African orphans tackle poverty and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. Harry went to Africa last December to support its work.
Chandauka was appointed chair of the board of trustees last year. The issues erupted when Chandauka was urged to resign and took legal action.
The trustees were opposed to the decision to give Chandauka the position and asked her to step down, which prompted her to sue.
In a mutual statement, Harry and Prince Seeiso wrote,
“What’s transpired is unthinkable. We are in shock that we have to do this.”
They continued,
“Nearly twenty years ago, we founded Sentable in honor of our mothers. Sentable means “forget me not” in Sesotho, the local language of Lesotho, and it’s what we’ve always promised for the young people we’ve served through this charity.”
Harry and Seeiso said,
“Today is no different. With heavy hearts, we’ve resigned from our roles as patrons of the organization until further notice in support of solidarity with the board of trustees who have had to do the same.”
They said,
“It is devastating that the relationship between the charity’s trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation.”
“We thank all the trustees for their service over the years and are truly heartbroken they’ve had to follow through with this act.”
The Charity Couldn’t Bear The Financial Burden Of Legal Issues
Harry and Seeiso explained that they couldn’t allow the charity to undertake the financial burden and must abandon their positions.
Chandauka took a veiled swipe at Harry when she said,
“There are people in this world who play the victim card and “use the very press they disdain to harm people.” She claimed she had attempted to “challenge their conduct.”
The High Court had accepted Chandauka’s application to hear her case. Harry and the trustees have not responded to her allegations.
They added that they announced proposals last April to move from being a development organization to one that was interested in health, wealth, and climate resilience in Southern Africa.
This fresh blow to Harry follows several disappointing events and changes within the organization’s structure.
The chief executive of Sentable, Richard Miller, quit after five years in his role. Harry’s advertiser, Johnny Hornby, quit after eleven years as a trustee, five of which he completed as a chairman.
After ten years, Andrew Tucker stepped down from his senior position at Sentable. Meanwhile, Chanauka alleged there was a
“cover-up in the charity” and claimed “abuse of power,” “harassment,” “misogyny,” and “weak executive management”
Were involved.
The loss of his charity work in Africa is devastating for Harry, who was very proud of his work in Lesotho and Botswana. Harry seemed to have a genuine passion for his work. Although, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the first scandal that has affected Sentable
