‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers remember Jackie Zeman, who played troublemaker turned nurse with the heart of gold, Bobbie Spencer, on the first anniversary of her death.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Bobbie Was on GH For 45 Years
May 9th, 2023, was the day that GH fans and castmates won’t ever forget. On that day, we learned that Jackie Zeman had passed following a brief battle with cancer.
Bobbie had been a mainstay in Port Charles for more than 45 years. GH’s then producer, Gloria Monty, knew a good thing when she saw it and cast Zeman in the role in 1977.
The younger generation of viewers only saw Bobbie as the wise, kind, nurturing mother of firecracker Carly Spencer. However, when Bobbie first came into town, she was ruthless.
As Luke Spencer’s (Tony Geary) little sister, she was a mover and shaker in town and someone who liked to stir the pot.
She did everything she could to break up Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner) and Laura Webber (Genie Francis), and she was no one to be messed with. She even faked a pregnancy to keep her hooks in him.
However, Scotty ends up marrying Laura, and then Laura falls in love with Bobbie’s brother, Luke. Bobbie was a part of the Scotty, Bobbie, Luke, and Laura quadrangle.
Bobbie was a hooker turned nurse and was considered a “bad girl.” Viewers were so upset about her messing with Laura that they would send her death threats. “I had full-time FBI bodyguards on me for over a year,” she once exclaimed.
Zeman once talked to Soap Opera Digest about her naughty days and said, “Bobbie was never an evil person; she was just misguided.”
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Jackie Zeman Broke Our Hearts When B.J. Died
Unarguably, her most powerful, poignant, and heart-breaking storyline was in 1994, when her daughter, Barbra Jean (B.J.) Jones (Brighton Hertford) tragically died after a drunk driver hit her school bus, and she was left brain-dead.
B.J.’s cousin, Maxie Jones (then played by Robyn Richards), was dying of Kawasaki disease and needed a heart transplant. Test results showed that her heart was a match for Maxie.
When Bobbie’s husband, Tony Jones (Brad Maule), wanted to give B.J.’s heart to Maxie, she fought him on it, saying that B.J.’s brain could heal independently, but Tony knew the reality of the situation as a doctor. Bobbie insisted that B.J. would recover.
There was no saving B.J., but if they gave Maxie B.J.’s heart, B.J. would always be alive through her. Zeman got to show her incredible range, and she was believable as a mother in unthinkable circumstances and impossible position.
In January 2024, thirty years later, Brighton Hertford appeared as an angel in the form of B.J. as a reporter named Angela Brighton.
It was an emotional episode as the cast finally said goodbye to Zeman and celebrated her time on the show. There were even some fun flashbacks of Bobbie and Laura and Bobbie and Lucy Coe (Lynn Herring) fighting.
The empathy and kindness demonstrated by Zeman’s character was the stuff of legends. Bobbie and Zeman’s character were a class act, and when Bobbie had her memorial service, the tears shed by the cast were the real deal.
