Welcome to Plathville spoilers finds that as we all know Kim Plath did not have the easiest of childhoods. In her own words we got to see that she was the child of an alcoholic and that had to grow up way too fast. She had to learn at a young age how to manage a household, and her own emotions, and basically be the parent for her Mom who, was not ‘present’ during a lot of her childhood. She doesn’t really go into detail about the reasons why her Mother became an alcoholic, or mention anything about her Dad besides the fact that she didn’t have one. But the fact of the matter is that the detail is there and its out in the open.
Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: Alcohol – The elephant in the room
As a result, Kim doesn’t want alcohol in her children’s lives at all. I can totally see this and even respect it because alcohol doesn’t have to be a thing in anyone’s life. I myself grew up in a tee-totaler household, my family never imbibed. My Mom got a gift of champagne at work one year for Christmas in the 70’s and since no one drank, it’s still in the china cabinet of my family home. So I can see where Kim has totally cut alcohol out of all parts of her life, and I can even see why she didn’t want it at her son’s wedding.
Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: The unforgivable sin, really?
However, both Kim and Barry tend to echo the same sentiment when it comes to alcohol, both of them disapprove. Disapproving of alcohol is one thing, but it looks like they seem to think that all ‘sins’, be it eating sugar or wearing jeans or whatever, will lead their kids down one path and one path alone, and that is alcoholism. I wouldn’t make that connection, but they bring it up a lot in connection with ‘sin’. They seem to think that above all else, alcoholism is the worst, most unforgivable sin of all and if you even look at a drink then its time to go into a 12-step program, or whatever sort of counseling that their beliefs would provide for that.
Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: Does alcoholism tend to run in these types of families?
They aren’t the only ones though, it seems to be a trend among Christian Fundamentalist families. Either one family member has either experienced alcoholism or at least the effects of alcoholism first-hand and is trying to escape from it, or they are the ones going through it. Arguably the worst cases is when one of the parents themselves are still embroiled in the battle and are using this form of religion to keep control over their family. However, this doesn’t seem to be what’s happening with the Plaths, no, just the opposite, actually.
Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: So is sugar and caffeine like, a stepping stone?
It seems the Plath are using their absolute fear of the disease to keep their children under control. We get it, guys, you don’t want your kids going off and drinking – even for just a moment well after they’re 21 and even with practicing moderation. That’s why you don’t encourage them to drink soft drinks because the potential of addiction to sugar and caffeine is just a step-down from alcohol addiction, right? And if they get sloppy with sugar and caffeine then they’ll graduate onto other ‘harder’ drugs like alcohol and coke (like, the kind you sniff), right? Okay, I get it now.
Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: Intervention time maybe?
Actually, that’s just my speculation. If that is indeed the line of logic that Mama and Papa Plath are using for not feeding their kids sugar and caffeine then… that’s a lot more troubling than I originally thought. They seem to have this air of moral superiority about things that is particularly off-putting and they seem to almost revel in not giving their kids things. It’s almost a Victorian way of living, remember how miserably children were treated in those days? It almost reminds me of that, with the lack of high infant mortality and childhood diseases.
Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: What is Barry’s story?
So if this Kim’s line of logic then what is Barry’s? According to some sources that I have uncovered he grew up in a completely secular high school and his own family was not legalistic at all. In fact they are kind of mystified as to how he became so deeply entrenched in the quiverfull lifestyle. He seems to espouse Kim’s views on drinking but what exactly was his experience with it? Was it negative? I mean he did mention going to California once in the 90’s but other than that we don’t really know much about his life pre-Kim. I guess the truth will all come out in the wash. Stay tuned!!!
