Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: Why Moriah Plath Should Be Applauded!

Welcome to Plathville Spoilers is saying that growing up the way Moriah Plath did, very sheltered and with a certain set of beliefs, I expected the trip to San Francisco with Olivia to go down like a lead balloon. Especially when they mentioned that there was going to be a tour of the Castro district. Those of us who are decidedly more ‘worldly’ will know that this is a hub of gay culture and pretty much where the whole rainbow flag movement started. It’s home to the first gay bar that didn’t bother blacking out the windows and encouraged a sense of pride in the LGBT community.

Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: Why Moriah Plath Should Be Applauded!

When I saw Olivia and Moriah go through this part of town, part of my heart sank. Because having grown up among christian, legalistic culture in the south, I’ve heard the anti-LGBT tirades and I didn’t hold out much hope for the Plath family. Maybe that was wrong of me but part of me cringed in anticipation over what I decided that I knew would come out of their mouths, a decidedly backward viewpoint on gays and quoting scripture and… well… you know the drill.

Welcome to Plathville Spoilers: Can we just applaud Moriah?

But Moriah surprised me. While, yeah it was pretty alarming that she didn’t know what the acronym LGBT stood for (“L what? G means Gay… B… Best? T… Transgender!” at least she got it half right.), her viewpoint on the LGBT way of life was quite refreshing, and I’m glad she said it. “People have a right to live how they want to live.” coming from someone who was literally straight from South Georgia who has had a very conservative upbringing – that’s a very mature, very tolerant way of looking at things.

I’m glad that she has Olivia as an influence. Olivia related that she grew up in a very legalistic church that would not allow women to speak at all. She said that she was miserable and filled with resentment about the whole thing, but when she “changed her own heart”, she found inner peace, and her Dad, who, from the impression I get was kind of totalitarian before actually came to his daughter later and apologized for letting this church cloud his opinions on things. They have a beautiful relationship now, she says.

I’m glad that she’s in Moriah’s life so that Moriah can have hope of her family coming around to at least meeting her halfway on things. If Olivia’s family can do it, there’s no doubt that the Plaths can have this sort of come to Jesus revelation as well. I do have hope for the Plaths, because while they’re definitely conservative in their views they really don’t seem staunchy. They didn’t like the idea of Moriah going with Olivia to San Francisco but they were true to their word and let her go. They didn’t find reasons at the last moment that she couldn’t go or deliberately try and keep her from spreading her wings or even take a heavy-handed moral stance with her and caution her against the stuff out there. Yes, Barry did tell her to keep the “junk” at bay, but not in a manner that would make his daughter resent him.

But as soft, open-minded and accepting as the Path’s seem this week, it looks like there’s trouble-a-brewin’. They said in the preview that they don’t want Ethan and Olivia alone with the younger kids while they’re gone on this little second honeymoon retreat. Apparently there’s a lack of trust there that’s a little bit alarming. They were talking about character flaws? What character flaws? Stay tuned!!!
