Longtime saxophonist Andrew Woolfolk has died. The veteran musician joined Earth, Wind & Fire in 1971 and was one of the original members through their historic run, passed away Sunday after battling a long illness that he had been struggling with for at least six years.

Philip Baily, the band’s lead singer, shared a touching post on Instagram about the loss of his friend.

“I met him in High School, and we quickly became friends and band mates. Andrew Paul Woolfolk was his name. We lost him today, after being ill of over 6 years. He has Transitioned on to the forever, from this Land of the dying to the Land of the Living.
Great memories. Great Talent. Funny. Competitive. Quick witted. And always styling.
Booski… I’ll see you on the other side, my friend.“

Woolfolk was with Earth, Wind & Fire through their most formative years and contributed to some of their biggest hits including ‘September’, ‘Boogie Wonderland’, ‘Reasons’, and ‘Devotion’ among many, many others. He took a break in the late 80’s but reunited with the group after to tour and perform once again.

His saxophone was no doubt a huge part of their sound and made his presence in the group known even alongside other saxophonists like The Phenix Horns.

Rest in peace Andrew and thank you for everything you contributed to not just music, but as a person.

    He was 71.
