Uh-Oh. It looks like it’s not going to be a traditional Christmas after all. Because of the rising cases of the COVID-19 variant Omnicron in the U.K., Queen Elizabeth has canceled her pre-Christma family lunch.

It is understood the decision was a precaution, with a Buckingham Palace source suggesting the meal could put too many people’s Christmas arrangements at risk if it went ahead. Here’s what you need to know.

Queen Elizabeth Just Made This Shocking Move Before Christmas

While there is “regret” that the lunch has been canceled one source close to the situation said there is a belief it is “the right thing to do” for all concerned. The 95-year-old monarch usually hosts the annual event for her extended family in the lead up to Christmas at Buckingham Palace.

During normal, non-pandemic years, the Queen invites her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to join her at Buckingham Palace before she departs for her annual Christmas stay at Sandringham. Traditionally, the pre-Christmas celebration gives the head of state a chance to catch up with relatives who are unable to travel to Norfolk for Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, if there are two people who are going to be skipping the Christmas festivities in the UK altogether this year, it’s Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Reports say the Duchess of Sussex doesn’t want to take a long transatlantic flight from Los Angeles to London with her daughter Lilibet, who will only be six months old during Christmas.

At least, that’s what royal expert and commentator Matthew Wright believes. He put it this way, “There’s so much speculation. They’re coming over, they’re not coming over. They’re coming over to show the child, they don’t want to show the child. I know that when we had Cassidy, we wouldn’t contemplate getting on a long-haul flight for the first 18 months of her lives. Covid came along and denied us that chance anyway.”

He added: “Lilibet is five, six months old, I think it’s perfectly understandable they wouldn’t necessarily want to cross half the planet for Christmas.”
