There’s a new report that says Prince Charles’ charity chairman has handed in his recognition, as he has expressed concerns over a six-figure donation and the cash-for-honors scandal that has rocked the Prince’s Foundation. Here’s what you need to know.
The chairman of Prince Charles’s charitable foundation, Douglas Connell, has resigned following claims that a six-figure sum from a wealthy Russian donor was accepted before being rejected by its ethics committee. However, the donation to the foundation, which is based in Scotland, was turned down after concerns about its provenance, it was reported by the Mail on Sunday and the Sunday Times.

Connell, who has been in the role since March, said he should accept responsibility “if it appears that serious misconduct may have taken place.”
He said in a statement: “I am both shocked and dismayed by newspaper reports that rogue activity of various kinds may have taken place within and outside the Prince’s Foundation. I and the other members of the board of trustees had no knowledge of any such activity and we have launched a rigorous and independent investigation. My view is that the person chairing any organisation should take responsibility if it appears that serious misconduct may have taken place within it. I believe that the correct course of action is for the chair to accept that responsibility and to stand down from the role.”
Earlier this month, Michael Fawcett, a former assistant valet to Charles, had temporarily stepped down from his role as chief executive of The Prince’s Foundation while an investigation into allegations about his conduct takes place. Fawcett is accused of using his position and influence to help Saudi businessman Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz obtain an honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, according to the Sunday Times.
Fawcett was paid to coordinate the title and help Mahfouz receive a “golden visa,” through which he hoped to achieve UK citizenship and residency, the report alleges.
Mahfouz has denied any wrongdoing, as has Prince Charles.
