You would never guess how much actual Pageantry goes into making a pig show happen, in the second episode of the Discovery+ series, Pig Royalty, Michelle Balero decided that she would make it happen, even during COVID, when the local stock show was cancelled due to virus concerns.
Of course there were minimal masks to be had at her event (I think I saw a grand total of one), but COVID guidelines weren’t the only thing shutting her down. Nope, the Rihn kids got her shut down the first time once they saw the venue where the event was being held.
Pig Royalty – The Piggy Pageant
The Behar county commision shut them down the first time. That’s because apparently the venue wasn’t fit for a pig show and the pigs could have actually gotten sick from how they had things set up.
But the Balero’s rallied and got their show back on the road. The skirted the COVID guidelines by getting an entirely new venue that didn’t have them (oh boy), although, Michelle Balero did make an interesting point, she thought it was discrimination against the 4-H kids because at the time they had not yet cancelled the football games and the bars were still open in Behar county.
Granted, this was the county in Texas that ended up with a high number of COVID infections, so I’m not actually sure that these things still being in full swing was a good thing or not.
Michelle Balero set up for the event with pink, black, and animal print decorations and made the Balero team wear crisp white button down shorts and dress khaki’s to show their pigs in. Both the Balero team and their rival on the Rihn team, Tyler, thought these outfits were absolutely hideous.
“Are we going to private school? To a dairy farm? What are we doing here?” asked Tyler in a shade delivery that was spot on. The decorations were nothing, however, apparently the awards (the buckles themselves) were not at the show, they were in Kentucky and Michelle was going to have to present her winners with a bunch of animal print ribbons and file a theft claim for the buckles while she shelled out $3 grand more for an entirely new set. Sometimes cancellations are a good thing. Yike! Stay tuned!!!
